X is for Xylitol

Xylitol is a non-artificial sweetener derived from plants. Although I have used XyloSweet in drinks in the past, my consumption is usually confined to chewing it in sugar-free gum.

Xylitol is actually good for your dental health. This natural sweetener has about 75% fewer carbs (and fewer calories) than sugar, and does not raise my blood sugar. There are other claimed medical and nutritional benefits to using xylitol, and you can read about them on this xylitol website.

  1. I gave up all artificial sweeteners a few years ago. I feel good about the decision, but I have out on a few pounds.

  4. You have to be careful with xylitol. Like most sugar alcohols, it can have a laxative effect. I made the mistake of pouring too much in my coffee one time. I don't think 5 minutes went by before I was running to the bathroom. Erythritol is the only sugar alcohol that I don't seem to have a reaction to.

  5. I like cane sugar, in small quantities. that's about it. I don't like the substitutes - they do something to my stomach.

  7. I try not to consume artificial sweeteners, but understand the necessity for low carb dieters and diabetics.
